Magic Marty's Travelling Roadshow Website Review by Hazzard
Early morning, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday, I get to sit in Shakespeare class with a big honking book on my lap while I listen to another oration on the complex nature of Willie and his silly plays. All was bleak until Greg from Magic Marty asked me to review his site. I immediately tuned out from whatever the professor was saying, because I knew it would take a far greater display of mental fortitude to compose a critical analysis of Magic Marty than it would for me to understand the deeper meaning of any Shakespearean text.
Why?
Because their web site is damn bizarre! Sure, it looks normal when you first get there with those deceptively humble black and white text boxes, but Oh! what unique terrors await you when you click on the links.
One of the main attractions (and I mean that in the freak show sense, not the Cindy Crawford sense) is Greg “That Guy” Steiner’s “Off the Cuff and Badly Drawn Comic” online. Greg has a drawing style that’s somewhere between Final Fantasy and Mad Magazine. The drawings are done in a variety of interesting perspectives that make Peanuts look flat and is as action-packed as a stale Ho-Ho. And you don’t have to strain your eyes to see this stuff like my grandma does when she’s looking at road signs.
Greg has a knack for parody and satire, stealing characters from pop-culture and molding them to fit his own evils. In this comic, you will see Mr. T employed in ways so hilarious it nearly rivals the Mr. T cereal. The comic strip also appears in the Hartwick College student newspaper Hilltops (a frequently used litter box liner) where OC&BD stands as one of the only works that has the guts and the intelligence to tackle student issues with the college administration. Word on the street is that the board of trustees has a hit out on Greg, but apparently, his being close friends with Aquaman has bought him a little bit of time.
In this zany potluck supper of stuff, there are many laughs to be had. A good deal of articles, artwork, and comics appear on the site. On site navigation is easy, but you never really know what you’re going to get when you click on some of these links. You may read an informative article from ex-Oneonta resident in exile Erin “The Red” McWrath outlining a method for brewing a good cup of coffee that even works for total morons. Scroll a bit down the page and a link may send you over to stick figures karate chopping each other to the death. Andrew “Crash n’ Dash” Kahrl will tell you why Ernest Hemmingway is badass, while Jonah Copeland will give you an education as to the true nature of pure evil.
The site is a lot of fun, but like a Sit-n-Spin, if you spend too much time on it, you’re reality will warp considerably, you’ll probably loose your balance, and lastly proceed to vomit. No one said these things couldn’t be a lot of fun, though. The ragtag band of hooligans at Magic Marty’s Traveling Roadshow is an unstoppable juggernaut of weird and off-kilter humor. Enjoy with caution. Evil lurks like old cocoa puffs hiding under couch cushions: a dark, tasty indulgence of the crunchy, sweet kind!
